Unreconciled: The Human Side of Healthcare

Target Audience: HIM directors / Coding managers / Revenue cycle leaders

The human side of healthcare - patient perspective

To the rest of the world, a medical record is a private story. It is a collection of fears, diagnoses, heartbeats, and healing.

But to the healthcare system, that story must eventually be translated. It must be broken down into alpha-numeric characters, mapped to strict regulatory frameworks, and assigned a financial value. As a medical coder, coding department manager, and educator, I have spent my career operating at this exact crossroads—the unseen engine room of medicine where a patient’s most vulnerable moments are transformed into data and dollars.

For years, I viewed this ecosystem through a professional lens. I taught the rules of the ledger. I managed the work queues. I fought the insurance denials. I understood the system as a complex machine that required precise inputs to keep the lights on.

Then, life forced me to sit on the other side of the desk.

I became the patient sitting under the harsh fluorescent lights, shivering in a paper gown, suddenly realizing that all my industry expertise couldn’t shield me from the raw vulnerability of illness and uncertainty.

I became the caregiver holding a loved one’s hand in a crowded emergency room, watching the clinical team rush by, while my mind processed the looming uncertainty and logistics of being a caregiver, full time employee, parent and more.

I became the friend sitting at a kitchen table, translating a confusing explanation of benefits (EOB) and a mountain of medical bills for someone I love, trying to inject clarity into a system designed to overwhelm them.

Suddenly, the data wasn't just data. The dollars weren't just revenue.

Every alphanumeric code I had ever supervised represented a human being trying to survive not just a medical emergency but the system itself. Every account balance represented a family trying to maintain their dignity while navigating a bureaucratic labyrinth.

This blog series is born out of those dual lives. It is a collection of personal stories from the back-office and the bedside. Here, we will pull back the curtain on the Health Information Management (HIM) and Revenue Cycle (RCM) industries—not to analyze metrics, but to explore the profound human impact of the work. We will look at what happens when the clipboard closes, when the billing code fails to capture the grief, and how we can find empathy within the machinery of healthcare.

Whether you are a healthcare professional looking for a reminder of why your work matters, a patient trying to make sense of the paperwork, or a caregiver carrying a heavy load: welcome.

Let's look between the lines of the chart together.
